For my synthesis I plan to compare and contrast Jacob Riis’s How the Other Half Lives (1890) and Sonia Nazario’s Enrique’s Journey (2002). More than a hundred years separate the time in which these two documents were published. However I believe both carry many similarities and differences that became apparent to me when I compared the two documents. A reason supporting why I believe there are similarities is because Nazario and Riis both wrote their book to raise awareness of the rough life in which most immigrants were forced to live in hopes that their writing would help bring social reform during their time. In general because of the span of time in which the two books were written, there are consequently several differences too. Through this comparison I began to grasp how they were both relevant to each other which lead me to ask several deep questions like why are immigrants in the U.S. negatively viewed by the majority of the American population throughout time, has fear of immigrants coming to the U.S. risen over the years, and what can be done to help the immigrants? These questions are very broad but at the same time they are increasingly more relevant it today’s society.

After reading your post, I can see that you will be writing about immigration and how it has changed or stayed the same over time. I can also see that you will be comparing the two documents Enrique's Journey, and How the Other Half Lives, to show how immigration was in the past compared to today.
ReplyDeleteWestin’s paper is probably about the similarities and differences between his two documents that are based on immigration. Both of the documents have the same goal by trying to raise awareness about immigration so sounds he will have views on that most likely. Also, he has many other views and ideas that compare and contrast immigration which will probably back up info from his two documents to further explain everything.
